More on West Virginia Sports Betting

West Virginia Sports Betting

In May 2018 the Supreme Court made the landmark decision to repeal the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA), which cleared the way for individual states to make their own sports betting laws. West Virginia was one of the quickest states to react and introduced legal online and retail sports betting in August 2018.

The industry truly found its feet after August 2019 when major national sportsbooks FanDuel and DraftKings entered the market. They were followed in January 2020 by BetMGM, and Caesars in September 2020.

Daily Fantasy Sports in West Virginia

Daily fantasy sports have been confirmed as legal in West Virginia since 2016. DFS served as a good alternative for a little bit, but even when sports wagering became legal, this option remained popular among the state’s players. DFS has a different legal definition than sports betting due to it being a game of chance that allows you to build a team by picking players.

PrizePicks WV is one of the most popular DFS providers on the market. The operator recently launched its new peer-to-peer fantasy sports game, PrizePicks Arena WV. This variation allows you to select more or less on 2, 3, or 4 player projections and be automatically placed into groups of other contestants. You’ll win if you get first place in your group or pick a perfect lineup.

Latest West Virginia Sports Betting News

The West Virginia sports betting market has reacted to the rise in popularity of eSports. February 2022 saw the legalization and regulation of eSports across sportsbooks in the Mountain State.

This will be a good area of growth for an already booming sports betting market. The latest figures show that West Virginia sportsbooks handled over $540m in 2021, up from $414m in 2020 and $226m in 2019.

This fantastic year means that state tax revenue increased to $4.4m, almost doubling from the 2020 revenue of $2.8m.

BetRivers became the latest sportsbook to launch in WV, adding to the online casino product it already has live in the state.

The history of West Virginia Sports Betting

West Virginia was one of the first states to legalize online and retail sports betting following the Supreme Court ruling that PASPA was unconstitutional. The Mountain State had even passed the legislation in March 2018, two full months before the Supreme Court handed control over sports betting to individual states.

The first sportsbook to open was at the Hollywood Casino in August 2018, with BetLucky launching as a mobile sports betting option in December 2018. However, BetLucky closed down in March 2019 and left the state without a mobile sports betting option.

This changed in August 2019, though, when FanDuel and DraftKings were granted licenses to operate their sportsbooks in West Virginia. These were followed by the addition of BetMGM in January 2020 and Caesars in September 2020, giving the Mountain State a stable and competitive legal online betting market.

West Virginia Sports Teams to bet on

As is common among states with smaller populations, West Virginia does not have any professional sports franchises of its own. This makes it a firmly college sports state, with fans flocking to watch the Marshall Thundering Herd and West Virginia Mountaineers.

West Virginia Mountaineers Football

The West Virginia Mountaineers may not be the biggest football program in the nation, but that doesn’t stop 60,000 of their rabid fans from packing out their Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium home each week.

The Mountaineers reward this unwavering support with regular bowl appearances, qualifying for 18 big end-of-season games since 2002. They have also finished as a ranked team by either the AP or Coaches poll on nine occasions throughout this spell.

Although the Mountaineers don’t get to see many of their stars turn pro and play in the NFL, two-time Pro Bowler and St Louis Rams MVP Marc Bulger is a former quarterback for the team. As is former All-Pro punter turned pro wrestling commentator Pat McAfee.

West Virginia Mountaineers Men’s Basketball

The Mountaineers have never been able to win the annual March Madness NCAA tournament, coming the closest in 1959 when they finished as runner-up. The Mountaineers came close again in 2010 when they made a run right through to the Final Four.

The team is regular contenders come the big end-of-year tournament, though. Since 2005 the Mountaineers have only missed out four times, making it through to at least the Round of 32 nine times during this spell.

Between 1974 and 2015 the Mountaineers played an in-state rivalry game against the Marshall Thundering Herd. However, with the series currently suspended, West Virginia currently has the bragging rights by holding a 34-11 overall record.

Marshall Thundering Herd Football

Fans of Marshall football may not have too many bragging rights over their West Virginia rivals as their annual Friends of Coal rivalry game was called off without the Herd winning a single encounter. However, despite this, Marshall have by far the best history of developing top NFL players.

Perhaps the most famous Marshall product is Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss. Moss is considered one of the greatest receivers of all time despite losing both of his Super Bowl appearances, and among his host of NFL, records is the most receiving touchdowns in a season with 23.

The other most successful Marshall alumnus is former quarterback Byron Leftwich. After a playing career mainly spent as a backup, Leftwich has begun to shine as a coach. He was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2020 Super Bowl Victory and is considered a lock for a future head coaching opportunity.

Marshall Thundering Herd Men’s Basketball

The Marshall Thundering Herd basketball program is in a period of transition as the team prepares to move to the Sun Belt Conference. The Herd marked their exit from the C-USA conference with a poor 12-21 season, going 4-14 in the conference.

However, there is plenty of hope for the Herd in the future. The team made the Round of 32 in the annual NCAA ‘March Madness’ tournament as recently as 2018 before being eliminated by their West Virginia rivals.

Although Marshall doesn’t have a great track record in having their players turn pro, they have some notable alumni. Ten-time NBA All Star Hal Greer graduated from Marshall, as did two-time Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni and current Utah Jazz guard Hassan Whiteside.
