49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk dials up Steelers intrigue with Mike Tomlin ‘twins’ post

Brandon Aiyuk isn’t doing much to dispel those percolating Steelers rumors.

Hours after Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan said “the Steelers have looked into” the star 49ers receiver, Aiyuk — who is entering his fifth season in San Francisco — posted a curious message to Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin on X on Tuesday.

“@CoachTomlin they saying we twins. What you think?” Aiyuk, 26, wrote.

Steelers fans immediately began weighing in, with one user posting, “Would be the sickest WR/Coach duo in a minute. Come to Pitt big bro!”

Another wrote, “[Steelers GM Omar] Khan has done miracles aiyuk, come catch balls from russ.”

The Steelers revamped their quarterback room in a matter of days, agreeing to a one-year contract with Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson last week before trading former first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Eagles after two seasons in Pittsburgh.

In the wake of the Pickett trade, the Steelers acquired Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who will now back up Wilson.

There’s been speculation about Aiyuk’s future with the 49ers following San Francisco’s Super Bowl 2024 loss to Kansas City in February.

One day after the game, in which the 49ers came up short in overtime, 25-22, Aiyuk posted an Instagram Story that read, “Don’t forget what got you there,” according to Yahoo Sports.

When pressed by reporters, “Is your hope to remain with the 49ers moving forward,” Aiyuk — who tallied 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 — replied, “If that’s the right move, yeah.”

49ers general manager John Lynch expressed in February how Aiyuk is a “guy we want to keep around for a long time.”

“I think we’ve got a nice track record of extending the players that are important to us, and Brandon’s the guy we want to keep around for a long time,” Lynch said, according to Pro Football Talk.

Aiyuk was selected 25th overall by the 49ers in the 2020 NFL Draft.
