‘The Show’ Episode 83: David Stearns Talks Mets Offseason

The Mets have had a relatively quiet offseason.

They have not made any major splash moves. They don’t have many major moves on the horizon it seems. How would you assess the Mets offseason?

Why not ask the guy making the moves himself.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns joined Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on “The Show” podcast on Wednesday.

‘The Show’ podcast with Joel Sherman & Jon Heyman:

  • YANKEES: They need two starters. Marcus Stroman would make sense. What else might they do the rest of the offseason?
  • METS: There are payroll considerations this offseason. They need a couple of relievers, but might not add more to the rotation or lineup. Are the Mets good enough to make the playoffs? Don’t see the Mets trading Pete Alonso.

David Stearns Interview:
Mets president of baseball operations

  • PETE ALONSO: Tough to line up a deal on the last year of arbitration. Not going to talk about contract negotiations publicly.
  • ROTATION: Going over the moves to get Adrian Hauser, Luis Severino and Sean Manaea. Sean’s stuff has changed and he added a new pitch. Excited where rotation is. Never stop looking.
  • REST OF OFFSEASON: They could add to the bullpen. Also an area you could make changes during the season.
  • STEVE COHEN: Have enjoyed working with him. Have formed a productive relationship. You want an owner who wants to win.
  • OUTFIELD: Brandon Nimmo not only a left fielder. They have a lot of good young outfielders. Drew Gilbert and Luisangel Acuna could make an impact at the MLB level in the not too distant future.
  • PAYROLL: Highest payroll in baseball. Not worried about payroll constraints.
