The huge opportunity facing Jets’ backup quarterbacks in preseason finale

Three things to watch for in the Jets preseason finale against the Eagles on Thursday night.

1. The offensive line has had a rough few weeks. The Eagles got the best of the Jets’ starters this week in joint practices after the Packers did the same last week. The Jets are expected to be without left tackle Mekhi Becton (concussion) and left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (chest), so it is not a fair evaluation, but the line needs to show improvement in both pass and run blocking.

2. The Jets’ defense gave up a 19-play drive last week to the Packers’ backups. The Jets continually failed to get off the field on third down against Green Bay, which has to be improved upon this week. Keep an eye on the new-look linebacking corps with C.J. Mosley, Noah Dawkins and rookie Jamien Sherwood. There will be a lot of pressure on them.

3. Rookie quarterback Zach Wilson has played well in his first two preseason games. But there are questions about the position after him. None of the Jets’ backups have played particularly well in training camp practices or the preseason games. Mike White is recovering from a rib injury and is not expected to play. This will be the last chance for James Morgan and Josh Johnson to impress the coaches.
